Abbey Lincoln Leaves Jazz Legacy

August 18, 2010

Abbey Lincoln, superb jazz singer and composer, left us a wonderful musical legacy when she died this week at age 80. I took the occasion to listen to some of her recordings and was struck by her elegant renditions of some of my favorite sheet music, “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe”(SMM Winter 2005), “A Time For Love” (March 1977), “Windmills Of My Mind” (April/May 1984) and “Crazy He Calls Me” (Sept/Oct. 1997). The musicians backing her, and the arrangements, are superb. Some of the jazz standards she sang are also contained in a wonderful new song folio, Late Night Jazz Standards available from Music books Now
